Recruitment isn’t easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it. And, frankly, we’d all be bored. It requires a resilience I’ve not seen across the majority of other industries. You have to give up a chunk of yourself to be successful. You become the crutch that people lean on – or (more often) dump on. 

I’m not saying that if it wasn’t for the candidates, staff and clients I’d love recruitment. But the fact is that your product has an opinion, your staff are dealing with stresses and mood swings, and as for your client base? Well, they’re loyal right up until they aren’t. Just when you get things moving, life finds a way of giving you a two-footed Sunday League tackle.

You’re never going to avoid it; the stress of recruitment is why the industry exists and thrives! But there are ways to hone your mental strength and remain a ball of positive energy: 

1. Get a grip on reality

Some days, nothing’s going to come off. Results take time and shit happens – you can’t take that personally. Roll with the punches and don’t let every fall knock you back.

Focus on the positives. You’re meant to inspire the team, so remind yourself (and them) of the good things that are happening. Celebrate every little win and even the funny fails. If you can add some light-heartedness to minor mistakes, you’ll be that ball of energy.

2. Put a number on your success

Money’s a big motivator – there’s no getting around that. So the price needs to be worth it. If you’re going to end your career on £30,000, what’s the point? Use a budget and cash forecast to drive yourself forward by visualising what winning means to you.

That’s not to say that pride isn’t valuable, but it doesn’t pay the bills. Focus on the financial reward: it’s a tangible, physical measurement of success you can show family and friends.

3. Keep it simple

Don’t get too caught up in the ‘science of business’. Sometimes blind optimism and passion helps sustain resilience in the face of adversity.

Cast aside those business books. Limit the amount of rules you set. Establish a clear purpose. This simplicity and focus on infrastructure will make it easier to keep staff goals aligned with yours.

4. Pick your battles 

You might be a perfectionist (and there’s nothing wrong with wanting everything to be perfect), but sometimes accepting the Pareto principle is good enough. Understand that the majority of returns come from the mainstream.

Don’t get lost in minute details – it’s exhausting and ultimately won’t matter. You’ll look back, see the same outcome, and recognise that it just wasn’t worth it. Get your operation on point before investing effort into marginal gains.

5. Surround yourself with support

The company you keep can make a real difference to your morale. It’s hard to stay resilient when you’ve got no allies.

Make a point of working with people who are gains, not drains. You want individuals who are willing to go into war with you – nothing less.

To be a leader, you have to love being the boss. No one will give a damn if they’re following someone who resents the role. Taking these steps on board will allow you to stand firm against each blow and focus on building the infrastructure to make marginal advances.
